Alibaba Revamps Qwen Chatbot, Cuts Model Pricing Amidst AI Race

Alibaba has officially launched a revamped version of its artificial intelligence chatbot, rebranding its Tongyi app to Qwen. This strategic move aims to consolidate Alibaba’s AI efforts and position the company more competitively against global leaders like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The updated Qwen app is now available on major app stores for both Android and iOS, with web and PC versions also released simultaneously. Alibaba describes the new app as the “most powerful official AI assistant” for its Qwen models and the primary gateway for users to experience its latest AI advancements.

The relaunch of Qwen signifies Alibaba’s commitment to translating its AI model progress into tangible, user-focused services. The company is integrating “agentic-AI” features, which are designed to assist users with a wide range of tasks, from research and report generation to managing daily activities and enhancing online shopping experiences on platforms like Taobao. This focus on practical applications aims to drive user adoption and deepen engagement with Alibaba’s AI ecosystem. The company also has plans for a global version of the app, contingent on the stabilization of the new design.

In conjunction with the chatbot’s revamp, Alibaba has also significantly reduced the pricing for its large AI model, Qwen3-Max. The cost of using this trillion-parameter system has been cut by nearly half, with API rates for input tokens decreasing from $0.861 to $0.459 per million, and for output tokens from $3.441 to $1.836 per million. This pricing adjustment is part of Alibaba’s broader strategy to monetize its AI offerings and make its advanced models more accessible to developers and businesses.

Alibaba’s aggressive push in the AI space has not gone unnoticed, with some observers in Silicon Valley expressing concern over the Chinese tech giant’s rapid advancements. Marketing specialists have noted what they describe as a “full-blown Qwen panic” among some in the US tech industry. This sentiment arises amidst increased investment and development in frontier AI models and infrastructure by both Chinese and American companies.

The Qwen chatbot is built upon Alibaba’s popular open-source AI model, which has garnered over 600 million downloads worldwide. This open-source approach allows third-party developers to utilize and modify Alibaba’s AI models, fostering a collaborative ecosystem. Alibaba’s recent Qwen3-Max model has achieved top-tier rankings on international benchmarks, even surpassing competitors in some global investment showdowns, positioning China as a significant player in the generative AI race alongside other domestic firms.
